Grief is Inevitable

Support is Essential

Grief and Bereavement Policy Researcher. Lived Expertise Advocate. Sole Executor. John’s Daughter.

FEATURED IN

Because loss touches all of us, and no one should have to carry it alone

With no federal mandate for bereavement leave, many employees are required to return to work within days of losing a loved one. While grieving can be a lifelong journey, the immediate needs of grievers and executors are going unmet in the workplace.

This is a timely issue that affects everyone. By 2040, more than 30 million Baby Boomers are projected to pass, placing unprecedented strain on the workforce. Yet our current infrastructure is not built to meet the inevitability of widespread loss.

My research on bereavement leave policies in the United States aims to effectively advocate for grief-informed systems that would benefit each of us, including the distinctive needs of executors.

and this
is my dad,
John

The sudden loss of my dad, John Michael Bates, when I was 25, changed everything for me. Because I’m an only child, and my dad wasn’t married when he passed, I became the sole executor for his estate. In the midst of grief, I navigated legal systems, paperwork, financial decisions, and responsibilities. I was making decisions on topics that were completely new to me. That experience revealed how little infrastructure exists to support those who are both grieving and responsible for managing what comes next.

This isn’t just my career, it’s my lived expertise. I’m committed to building stronger systems for executors and estate fiduciaries, employees, and workplaces.
